Mamá y papá tienen tanto miedo.
¿De qué tienen miedo? ¿De qué
está hecho su miedo?

El crepúsculo
baja despacio hasta la calle inmóvil
de una ciudad lejana. Y qué azul es el miedo
bajando por la calle de una ciudad lejana.
Y qué hostil es el mundo si flota y sube el miedo
desde la calle inmóvil.

Ahí, siempre alrededor, nos dicen, es el miedo
un gigante invisible que recorre la noche,
sus dedos son cuchillos, su corazón la piedra
negra y fría del odio, y camina afilando
el brillo de sus ojos en el hambre del mundo.

Y qué hostil es el mundo si flota y sube el miedo
desde la calle inmóvil.

Quedémonos en casa esperando otro día.
Otro día se esconde más allá de la noche
Hay un país extraño que podría no serlo
extendido en la noche. Quedémonos en casa
para siempre.

Mum and Dad are so afraid.
What on Earth are they afraid of?
What is their fear made of?

The twilight falls softly on the quiet street
of a far away city. And how blue is fear
as it walks down the street of a far away city.
And how unfriendly is the world if fear floats and climbs
from the stillness, the quietness
of the quiet, still street.

There, around us –they say– fear is always a giant,
an invisible giant who strolls across the night
for the night is his garden.
His fingers are knives and his heart is the stone
of black and cold hate. As he walks he goes grinding
the fire of his eyes on the thirst of the world.

How unfriendly is the world if fear floats and climbs
from the stillness, the quietness
of the quiet, still street.

We'd better stay at home. Let's stay at home and wait
for the new day to come. For there must be a day
hidden behind the night.
And there is this strange country, this foreign land that maybe
could be ours in the daylight
but it's lain in the night. Let's stay at home
forever.
